ASTM A36 steel is easy to weld using any type of welding methods, and the welds and joints so formed are of excellent quality.
Any standard carburizing and hardening methods of AISI 1018 steel is suitable for ASTM A36.
ASTM A36 is subjected to the following processes:
Normalizing at 899 degree – 954 degree (1650 degree F-1750 degree F)
Annealing at 843 degree – 871 degree (1550 degree F-1600 degree F)
Stress relieving at 677 degree – 927 degree (1250 degree F-1700 degree F)
Carburizing at 899 degree – 927 degree (1650 degree F-1700 degree F)
Hardening at 788 degree – 816 degree (1450 degree F-1500 degree F)

The tensile strength of the SS400 Steels is expressed in Newton per millimeters and it must be at-least 400 N/mm2 (MPa) and maximum can be 510 N/mm2 (MPa).
The yield strength is minimum 205 to minimum 245 N/mm2 (MPa) depending on the thickness.
The yield strength for thickness below 16 mm is minimum 245 N/mm2 (MPa) whereas for higher gauges above 100 mm is minimum 205 N/mm2 (MPa).
The elongation property of SS400 steel varies with the ranges of thickness. The minimum percentage ranges for elongation is 17% thicknesses till 16 mm, 21% for thicknesses till 40 mm, and 23% greater than 50 mm.
